Setting a Date
Well, friends, after quite a lot of work with my budget I've decided I'm going about managing my money all wrong. I think the usual advice is build a tiny emergency fund of $1k and then aggressively pay down high interest credit card debt. 🪨 I'm an extremist, so I kept an emergency fund of $150 and aggressively paid down high interest debt, thinking the credit card essentially is an emergency fund, and who wants to give any extra money to banks?
The problem with all of that is $150 doesn't cover rent. It doesn't cover the car payment. Too many bills aren't actually payable with credit. The emergency fund needs to be wayyy bigger. I'm thinking a floor of $10k. 🔑 Everybody has their own number, their own finances, their own budgets. I played with my finances for two months and determined the price of liquidity is $900. I pay $900 in credit card interest over the next eight months that I wouldn't have to pay if I attacked that debt with every extra dollar every paycheck. That helps me put away $10k and have peace of mind. I accept that price. I need that money. My job is way too uncertain. They could fire me tomorrow. Man, I hope they fire me tomorrow.
I don't think we're supposed to spend our lives hating our jobs all day, every day. 82% of people can't stand their jobs. Also, 48.97% of all statistics are made up on the spot. But I digress. I don't want to be a whiny statistic. I am one who absolutely loves working and earning money. ⛰️ I don't ever wanna quit. Bring it on! But to hell with being taken advantage of. To hell with tiny paychecks. I'm working on an exit strategy. It's so important. I don't want to be trapped at this desk anymore. I want to be rich. I want to enjoy my work.
So I've reengineered my financial plan. April 30th, 2027, could very well be the day I quit my job and start earning life-changing money. Or tomorrow. Regardless, I'm giving myself a runway. I hope I reach the end before I take flight.
